Please get in touch if you need a tax, accounting, or business speaker for your panel, podcast, classroom, or industry event. I have experience teaching both lay-folks and accountants, and would love to share my knowledge with your audience.
I extend my passion for helping business owners to group settings, too! Read below for upcoming events.
Teaching &
Speaking
Washington Clay Arts
We kicked off 2024 with a tax workshop for Washington Clay Arts Association - talking through Federal income taxes for small business owner-artists, including updates and things to watch out for this upcoming tax season. A lively group with lots of great questions!
WE-GSBA
In November of 2023, I presented the TOP 10 TAX MISTAKES THAT BUSINESS OWNERS MAKE to We-GSBA, the women and gender-expansive initiative within the GSBA. Ah! How satisfying to be able to give folks pro-active advice that they can use BEFORE they get into those trouble spots!
The Pledgettes!
I had the privilege to share my presentation FINDING THE TAX SUPPORT YOU NEED, with the Pledgettes where I talked about the real-life aspects of finding and working with a tax professional, getting tax advice, and making the most of the information you receive.
Taxes for Artists
This year, we have the luxury of breaking our annual tax talk with Artist Trust into two: one evening for Federal Taxes and another evening just focusing on Washington State and other local tax issues. Washington State has a unique taxing regime, and it's fun to dive into the details.
Seattle Public Library has some amazing resources for business owners. I'm so proud to be presenting a 3-workshop series in October, hosted by SPL.
My workshops will cover fundamental tax and accounting information every business owner should know, and I'll be taking questions, too.
Artist Trust has asked me back again to share fundamentals of taxes for artists. We'll start with a few key concepts that everyone should know. Then, we'll focus on questions from the audience so folks can get their burning topics addressed!
I love working with Artist Trust - thanks for asking me back!
"Artist Trust aids artists during the pandemic, providing resources for a leg up. I'll speak at the March 11 Lunch & Learn, addressing tax queries. Attendees can submit questions beforehand, ensuring a presentation brimming with tax insights. Thrilled to maintain my longstanding partnership with Artist Trust, supporting them through thick and thin!"
Women Business Owners will be hosting me on in February to discuss taxes for entrepreneurs and business owners. I'll be covering some fundamental tax topics to try to clear some of the fog and will be providing a few tips & tricks for navigating the world of taxes during the year. I love customizing talks to the day's audience, so we'll leave some time for Q&A, too.
Back for round three! I'm proud to present an annual tax update to the Seattle chapter of the Association of Government Accountants (AGA), this time remotely as we all stay safe at home. I'm happy to be able to provide valuable information about the major legislation we had in 2020, starting with the Families First act back in March, to the Consolidated Appropriations Act in Dec.
This time, it's the King County Public Defender's office who has asked me to give their panel a talk on tax topics relevant to their group. In this session, we'll talk through tax deductions available to solo/small business owners, including home office, travel, mileage, and other expenses that overlap with the personal. We'll take a little bit of time to discuss self-employment tax, and touch on entity selection as well.
Once again, I get to combine two of my favorite things: accounting and yoga! My yoga alma mater Seattle Yoga Arts has invited me back to co-teach the business of yoga to this year's crop of students, this time with the amazing Claudette Evans. We'll cover Washington State and Federal taxes, along with planning for taxes, thinking about accounting for your freelance business, pricing, contracting vs employment and more.
Retirement plans for Federal Public Defenders
The nice folks at the office of Federal Public Defender - Western District of Washington have invited me to speak to their panel of attorneys about retirement planning in early October 2020.
We'll talk about retirement plans available to lawyers, not-to-be-missed tax deductions, and maybe throw in some cash-flow planning for businesses that deal with lump-sum payments. Good stuff!
In this one-hour webinar, I got a chance to chat with Writers' Co-op founders and hosts Jenni Gritters and Wudan Yan about how to set yourself up for tax-season success. W2 versus 1099 work setups, the benefits of becoming an LLC (and opening a business bank account), what quarterly estimated taxes really mean, and how to make the most of your deductions. We'll begin with a panel discussion, then jump into a Q&A segment.
Pay It Forward to Future You: Investing & Retirement for Freelancers
Along with Stephanie Xenos from MoneyMuse, Jenni, Wudan, and I will discuss the various retirement plan options for self-employed folks, budgeting for savings, and more. October 1, 2020, at noon. Come with your questions - we'll dive into the details!

The state legislature passed RCW 35-102.130 which tells cities in Washington how to impose a B&O tax on business located in their cities, and whether or not those business can be taxed on revenue earned outside of the city. At the September 2020 meeting, I'll share the ins and outs of this change with my fellow CPAs so they can implement it in their own businesses and share the information with their clients.
Elite Accounting Seattle invited me to present in-house continuing education (CPE) on the tricky world of Partnership Tax law later this month. What does minimum-gain chargeback mean again? Why doesn't basis equal the capital account? We're going to go through those concepts and more in this three-hour intensive on partnership taxes. Thanks for the opportunity, Elite! Weeeee!
